English

We believe the teaching and learning of English enables pupils to communicate and understand the world around us; it gives children confidence and a way to express their emotions, opinions and ambitions. Our English programmes of study follow the National Curriculum. All children are taught English skills directly and then apply these skills across a range of cross-curricular contexts. To view the National Curriculum please click here.

Writing is taught in a variety of phases, using speaking and listening, drama and reading to capture the imagination! From our Reception class, children will be encouraged to write a variety of genres and build on this as they continue to develop their writing skills throughout Key Stage 1 and 2. Boroughbridge Primary have adopted ‘The Write Stuff’ approach to teaching and learning English to ensure clarity to the mechanics of writing. Along with utilising this method, teachers exploit cross-curricular links wherever possible and further develop writing skills within a variety of contexts.

Learning to read fluently is a fundamental part of a child’s education in order to confidently access all areas of learning and prepare them for the next stage in their life. We strive to create a reading culture that teachers our children not only how to read, but about the many joys of books.

Phonics and Early Reading is taught through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, which is a systematic and synthetic phonics programme. We start teaching phonics in Nursery/Reception and follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised progression document through into KS1. Please see our Phonics and Reading Policy for further information.

From Year 2 and above, whole class texts (fiction and non fiction) are carefully chosen to support children’s understanding in different topics and immerse them in a variety of rich vocabulary.
